The "major" label

Log start: 2:45pm February 21st 2009

Another lecture from my mom about choosing Political Science as a major...
long story short, all her co-workers and even the guy that does our taxes today was like "WHAT!? you go to stony brook to take political science!?"

and then my mom called me today to tell me this and i couldn't comment on it.
but according to my career class, the "major" you choose doesn't matter, it's just the courses you took in college and if you passed it or not.
since i knew that chinese immigrant parents wouldn't be able to understand this concept, i didn't even bother explaining it to them. or else my dad would be like "YOUR TEACHERS ARE LYING!"

Yep, sounds pretty riddiculous doesn't it? i don't even know what to do now, i KNOW that i want to finish Political Science because it's what i'm interested and good at, but i guess i might have to double major.
Although my mom does say "okay son, what i'm telling you is only a suggestion, i'm NOT forcing you to do what you don't want"
but the translated version could amount to something like "at least take your mothers advice, just a little?"

So this puts me in an awkward situation...
truth is, i don't care that her co-workers daughters and sons graduated with a degree in math or engineering and where they are now in life. Hell, why the shit should i care at all? there are so many other factors that determine how much you make and how far you'll advance that all the immigrant parents of first generation ABCs don't seem to understand.
While i don't care about what they do at all, i don't want to seem like a rebel asshole doing whatever i want while my parents pay for my college... so translated some more, i guess my mom is telling me to double major in something more common like engineering, math, or bio...

and i even threw out my trump cards of "but that means i might have to stay an extra year at school!" and "what if i'm not interested? i won't get good grades!"

and she trampled over it with her royal flush of "It's okay."

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO COMPETE WITH THAT!?

HakoneDayDreamer, i might really have to stay an extra year at stony brook to complete a double major -_-

The absolute same mindset from my folks. But I am not staying in SBU for another year, I refuse. Ultimately, you make the final decision.

BTW, unblock me from AIM! >:O

I suppose a lot of us are on that "Major" Cruise, huh? Keep doing what you're doing because it is YOUR LIFE and YOUR FUTURE that you are working on. Who cares if so-and-so has a degree in this-and-that? That's what they decided to work on and achieve in their life. I really dislike it when parents compare their children to those of others. I mean they all have positives and negatives but come on ... one person's success is not generic and is not something EVERYONE should strive to achieve.

Like they say: "Do what you love, and love what you do."
